A man in Phulbani, Odisha has been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a POCSO court for raping a young girl last year. The convict, Kissan Sanseth from Kotagarh, has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 55,000. In case he fails to do so, he will have to serve an additional jail term of eight months, as informed by the special public prosecutor, Asim Praharaj.
The verdict was announced on Wednesday after taking into account the statements of 18 witnesses as well as medical documents. According to Praharaj, the victim, a nine-year-old girl, was playing near the accused's house in the village on May 23, 2023. The accused forcefully took her to his house and committed the heinous act of rape.
What's even more disturbing is that the accused had threatened to harm the victim if she dared to speak about the incident to anyone. However, the very next day, the victim's family filed a complaint with the Kotagarh police station and the accused was immediately arrested. He was then produced before the Balliguda court, where the case was heard.
The prosecution presented a strong case against the accused, and the court delivered a well-deserved punishment based on solid evidence. This verdict serves as a warning to all those who think they can get away with such heinous crimes. The law will not tolerate such actions, and justice will be served.
