On a Thursday, Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, took a helicopter ride over the Malkangiri district to assess the damage caused by a recent flash flood. He also instructed officials to submit a report on the destruction within seven days.
During the aerial survey, Majhi was accompanied by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari and Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja. In an interview with X, Majhi stated that he had visited Malkangiri and discussed the flood situation. He assured that the government was taking necessary measures to handle and contain the flood.
The chief minister emphasized the importance of providing aid to every affected individual and directed the district officials to ensure that nobody is left without assistance. Majhi also stressed on the government's focus on improving road connectivity, food and water supply, housing, healthcare services, and providing compensation to those affected by the flood.
He further mentioned that the concerned department has been requested to speed up the restoration work. During a review meeting, Majhi suggested that special aid could be provided to the tribal-dominated district, which has been severely impacted by the flash flood.
Majhi expressed concern over the possibility of water-borne diseases spreading in the area and urged authorities to provide clean drinking water to the affected individuals. He also advised them to take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of diseases.
After the meeting, Minister Pujari informed that the flood had damaged crops on 8,830 hectares of land. He added that 21 houses were completely destroyed, while 576 others were partially damaged. The flood also caused damage to 15 roads in the district.
Pujari praised the effective efforts of the district administrations of Malkangiri and Koraput and commended the disaster response forces, fire service, and police personnel for their tireless work during the flood.
He also announced that a survey will be conducted to assess the damage to crops and houses. As per the Odisha Relief Code, the government will provide compensation to those whose houses and crops have been destroyed. The district administrations have been instructed to keep adequate stocks of medicines and necessary items to aid the affected individuals.
