The Lincoln Center in New York City, a renowned performing arts establishment, recently announced 'Hip Hop Week', a four-day event that will be the finale of its Summer For The City Festival. This event will not only commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, but also provide a holistic experience of the music genre, showcasing how it has left a mark on all facets of culture, including art, dance, and fashion.
The opening day of 'Hip Hop Week' will begin with Dance Storytime led by dance instructor TweetBoogie, an interactive and family-friendly lesson that will educate guests on “When The Beat Was Born”. The two-part commencement closeout will feature a special dance battle and silent disco at The Dance Floor, followed by a special concert of J.PERIOD’s Live Mixtape: Gods & Kings Edition, featuring Rakim and Big Daddy Kane among other performers.
Throughout the week, attendees can also experience Sainted, a “trap choir experience” stemming from Southern Black church’s traditional choir, as well as Jazz Està Morto, an orchestra led by Arthur Verocai. In addition, the outdoor film series “Can’t Stop the Street: Hip-Hop on Screen” will also be showcased, featuring films that have contributed to the cultural music form’s presence and themes in cinema history.
To wrap up the celebration, a concert will be held featuring Rakim and new guests such as Rapsody. In addition, workshops, interactive events, and art installations comprised of archival pieces from the past 50 years will be hosted, highlighting the various ways Hip Hop has cultivated and maintained a social impact on a global scale.
