Kyren Wilson, the current world champion in snooker, is impressing fans and critics alike with his outstanding performance on the table. Despite holding this prestigious title, Wilson admits that he is not entirely satisfied with his snooker resume and believes he could have won many more titles.
Over the past few months, the Warrior has been on a winning streak, securing victories at the Xi'an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open following his triumph at the Crucible. With eight ranking titles under his belt, the 32-year-old is now one of the top contenders at the ongoing UK Championship, hoping to add another trophy to his collection.
Reflecting on his career so far, Wilson feels that it could have been even better and is determined to increase his title tally at the current tournament in York. "You're judged by your performance in these Triple Crown events," the world champion stated. "There's always added pressure as they only come around once a year. These events hold great prestige in our sport, and every player wants to make their mark on them. Deep down, everyone wants to win these titles more than any other."
Wilson is currently in his prime and playing some of his best snooker consistently, which is why he believes it is crucial to capitalize on this momentum. "I feel like I'm at the peak of my powers, and I need to make the most of it while I can," he said.
However, despite his recent successes, Wilson admits that he is not entirely content with his achievements so far. "To be honest, I'm not really happy with my CV," he confessed. "I feel like I could have won a lot more than I have. I've reached numerous finals but haven't been able to seal the deal when it mattered."
Driven by his passion for the sport since the age of six, Wilson has always dreamt of being a world champion and the best player in the world. "I have a strong desire to win. It's also a special feeling to see my kids watch me play and be mesmerized when I bring home a trophy for them," he shared.
Apart from winning titles, Wilson also has his sights set on reaching the top of the world rankings, currently second to Judd Trump. While Trump's half a million-pound win at the Saudi Arabia Masters has made it challenging to catch up, the Warrior remains determined to fight for the top spot.
"It feels like a never-ending task since Judd's victory," Wilson acknowledged. "However, if it were a regular tournament and not such a huge cash prize, we would be neck and neck by now. But it's a great challenge to be a part of, and it's something I am striving for. I want to tick it off my CV by the end of my career, so I'll keep doing what I'm doing and keep moving in the right direction. As long as I do that, I give myself a chance."
Since becoming the world champion, Wilson has handled the added pressure and attention with grace, thriving under the spotlight instead of crumbling under it. "It's been a smooth transition for me," he shared. "My confidence has reached new heights, and I've started to command a fear factor that I didn't possess before."
He went on to explain that in the past, there may have been doubts when he would say he could win a particular tournament, but now having achieved the ultimate title, those doubts have vanished. "I truly believe in my abilities and statements now," Wilson said. "That belief also creates a fear factor around me, much like what Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Williams, John Higgins, and Judd Trump bring with their consistent victories."
Wilson's next match at the UK Championship is against Stephen Maguire, and he is scheduled to play on Monday at 1 pm. With his determination and confidence, the world champion is sure to put on an impressive performance, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
