Collectors instructed to immediately implement English spellings.

In an effort to maintain consistency and accuracy in government records and communication, the Revenue and Disaster Management department has issued a directive to all District Collectors. The department, led by Additional Chief Secretary Arabinda Kumar Padhee, has instructed the Collectors to ensure the immediate adoption of revised English spellings for districts, sub-divisions, tehsils, blocks, and urban local bodies. This directive comes after the state government released a notification on June 22, 2026, revising the English spellings of administrative units to better align with their Odia pronunciation.

It is important to note that this exercise only involves the correction of spellings and does not affect the official names or administrative status of any area. Padhee's letter to the District Collectors emphasizes the importance of implementing the revised spellings in all official documents, correspondence, notifications, and records. This also includes online platforms, advertisements, signboards, and any other form of government communication.

It is the responsibility of the Collectors to ensure that all government offices, local bodies, and related institutions under their jurisdiction comply with these changes in a timely manner. To monitor the progress of this implementation, the R&DM department has requested that the District Collectors submit an Action Taken Report within 15 days of receiving the directive. This report should outline the steps taken to integrate the revised spellings into all relevant documents and communication.

In addition, businesses and private institutions in the affected areas have been given six months to update their signboards with the new spellings. Padhee has expressed the significance of adopting these revised spellings, stating that it will help preserve Odisha's linguistic and cultural identity. It will also ensure standardization and consistency in government records and administrative processes throughout the state.
