Kate Garraway has opened up about her journey through grief and healing, seven months after her husband Derek Draper passed away. The Good Morning Britain presenter, who has been married to Derek for 19 years, shared the heartbreaking news in January that he had lost his three-year battle with complications caused by Covid-19 at the age of 56.
In the months following Derek's death, Kate has been honest and raw about her experience with grief, admitting that she is still in the early stages and facing many ups and downs. However, she is doing her best to focus on their two children, 18-year-old Darcey and 14-year-old Billy.
Speaking at the ASA Foundation's ball, Kate shared that she is slowly starting to come out of her grieving state, but it hasn't been easy. "I'm just at that early stage at the moment of coming out of grief. I'm just barely holding it together," she said. "I haven't been out much, so it's nice to be here tonight, even though it's a school night. I have to be on TV tomorrow, so I won't be able to stay out too late."
Derek's struggle with Covid-19 had been ongoing for several years before his passing. Kate also mentioned that she is trying to cherish life in the present and is looking forward to turning 60 in a few years. "I've got my TV make-up on now, so I look okay," she joked. "But I can't believe I'm getting closer to 60! I'm really celebrating life now, no matter what age. I'm not sure if I'll have a party yet. It's still one step at a time with Derek's passing being so recent."
Kate also expressed gratitude for the support she has received from her colleagues on TV and radio, calling them "another family." She said, "The Good Morning gang are just lovely. They're like another family. They're a special group - and everyone at Smooth Radio too. Most of the time, we don't get to hang out because I'm on air so early and then rushing off to my radio show. We all get along so well, I'm very lucky."
Derek's funeral took place in February this year, and Kate and Derek have two children together, Darcey and Billy. Kate's Good Morning Britain co-host Charlotte Hawkins recently spoke about the team's support for Kate during this difficult time. "When Kate lost her husband, Derek, in January, everyone pulled together to support her," she said. "She's been through an extraordinarily tough time. It's going to take time for Kate to heal, but she knows we're all here for her."
