Vice President Kamala Harris is throwing a house party on September 9th to celebrate Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday. This event marks the first time a sitting Vice President has ever hosted a celebration of this kind. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Harris’s party will feature 20 acts and 400 guests, inclusive of actors, cultural trailblazers, industry leaders, and musicians. The event is a joint effort between the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation Urban, and is expected to be a major highlight of the administration’s work to celebrate the arts.
Popular artists such as Common, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante, and Jeezy are just some of the names that have been confirmed to perform at Harris’s house party. The Recording Academy’s President and CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., had this to say about the monumental event: “The Recording Academy and the Black Music Collective have had a tremendous year paying tribute to and honoring the legacy of Hip-Hop in its milestone 50th year. Taking the celebration to our nation’s capital alongside Vice President Harris is truly something special and I look forward to a historic day.”
The Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective was created in 2020, in a partnership with Color Of Change. Color Of Change encouraged the Academy to create a Black music advisory group, which subsequently gave birth to the Black Music Collective. Valeisha Butterfield Jones, the Recording Academy’s Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, expressed her thoughts on the collective’s significance in a statement to the Recording Academy: “Music plays a profound role in shaping our culture, and Black music has been the cornerstone in the development of the world’s dynamic soundscape. The Recording Academy has entered a new chapter of transformative change, and we are honored to partner with Color of Change as we work together to set new standards to elevate Black music creators and build a more diverse and equitable industry.”
Since its founding, the Black Music Collective has honored various artists and labels, such as John Legend, MC Lyte, DJ D-Nice, and LVRN, in 2022. In 2023, they celebrated Dr. Dre, Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, and Sylvia Rhone, CEO of Epic Records. With the upcoming house party, the collective looks forward to another milestone in their mission to honor the legacy of Hip-Hop.
