John Higgins celebrated his 48th birthday in May this year, but that hasn't stopped him from believing he still has big titles left in him before he hangs up his cue. The four-time world champion and current number nine in the world has been a force at the top of snooker since turning professional in 1992, with many of his major titles coming in the mid-2000s.
However, since 2018, Higgins has only won one ranking title - the Players Championship in 2021 - and those seven final defeats in the last five years have led to doubts over his ability to get over the line. Despite these doubts, Higgins still has faith that he can claim major titles, and he discussed this in an interview with the Talking Snooker podcast.
“I do, I do. I don’t know if that’s just…I don’t know…but I really think I’ve got some big ones still left in me. I hope I do. The subconscious is a massive thing, I think, and I really am finding it tough to pick that cue out of that case just now. I don’t know what it is.”
Higgins recognizes that he will need to find motivation in order to keep his epic run of being in the top 16, dating back to 1995, going. He's also thought about bringing in outside help - such as a sports psychologist or another form of coach - but he's sticking with what he knows for now.
Higgins showed what he's still got left in the tank when he thrashed Kyren Wilson 13-2 at the Crucible this year, and he expects to pick up some more silverware before his immense career comes to an end. He's already said that when he reaches 50, he'll re-evaluate what he wants to do with his life.
John Higgins has had an incredible career and it doesn't look like it's done yet. With the Wizard of Wishaw's ambition and determination, we can expect to see him competing for more major titles in the future.
