The Brooklyn Public Library has recently revealed an exhibit dedicated to one of hip-hop's biggest stars, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. Titled "The Book of HOV", the immersive experience was created by Roc Nation and features never-before-seen photos, art, and ephemera from Jay-Z's archives.
The exhibit is free and located on two floors of the Central Library at 10 Grand Army Plaza. It provides an in-depth look at the Brooklyn-bred artist's life and career, with text, audio, and curation by Roc Nation teams and partners.
In celebration of the exhibit, the Library also announced limited edition releases of 13 library cards, each representing one of Jay-Z's 13 solo albums. Visitors can collect all 13 cards starting in August 2023 at the Central Library and Marcy Library branches.
On the night before the exhibition was revealed to the public, Jay-Z attended a pre-opening party with his wife Beyoncé, family, and friends. Other celebrities and notables included Big Daddy Kane, Alicia Keys, Questlove, DJ Khaled, and more.
Brooklyn Public Library CEO Linda Johnson spoke to Rolling Stone about the exhibit. "JAY-Z's story is a uniquely Brooklyn story, and it's a privilege to host this exhibit created as a labor of love by Roc Nation and the people who've known and worked with him over the years," she said.
Johnson also mentioned that the exhibition and library cards will attract new visitors to the Library, many of whom may not be familiar with the services they offer. Patrons can borrow vinyl records, musical instruments, sheet music, and even make their own music or podcast in their recording studio.
