Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher expressed his concern over the team's recent defeat, saying it was a "big worry" for their manager, Arne Slot. Despite this, Carragher still believes that Liverpool will come out on top in their match against Galatasaray and make it to the Champions League quarter-finals. However, he also predicts that they will be eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.
The first leg of the last-16 tie against Galatasaray ended in a 1-0 loss for Liverpool, with Mario Lemina scoring the winning goal for the Turkish side. Now, Slot's team must overturn that result in the return leg at Anfield next week in order to progress to the next round, where they will face either Chelsea or PSG. Reflecting on the defeat, Carragher commented, "This was an end-to-end game that ended up being a bad one for Liverpool.
It was a bad result and they played poorly in the second half. The first half started well, but a lot of that was due to Galatasaray's mistakes. I don't think they have a great team, so Liverpool should have been able to beat them and progress." He added, "I still have 98% confidence that Liverpool will come out on top in the next match, but this defeat is a worry for the manager and the team.
It reminded me of their performance in the group stages earlier this season against Galatasaray. This team is just not performing at the level they were expected to this season, despite spending over £400 million in the summer." Carragher also expressed his doubts about Liverpool's chances of advancing further if they do end up facing PSG in the next round, saying it's a "big worry" for him. He continued, "The performances from Liverpool this season have been a major concern for the manager.
I remember saying on this show during the group stage that something needed to change. Slot has tried various tactics and formations, but nothing seems to be working. At no point this season have I felt like Liverpool were in control of a match." He went on to say, "They either play end-to-end football, which Slot wanted to change, or they become slow and predictable.
Even if you were to give another manager this same squad, I don't think it would make a significant difference. The way the team has been put together and the lack of options in certain areas are also big problems. So it's not all on the manager, but as we all know, they are the ones who ultimately take the blame."
