The Supreme Court of India has drawn attention to a critical issue regarding the sharing of content on online platforms like YouTube. Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh expressed their concern about the lack of laws in regulating such content and the various inappropriate things that are being shared.
During a case involving YouTubers, the court highlighted the need for action to be taken against these channels and their shows. Justice Surya Kant stated, "Something has to be done about them and we will do it. We are not going to let this issue go unnoticed." The court has already issued a notice and seeks to address this matter with the help of Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The bench emphasized the importance and sensitivity of the issue, and urged the government to take necessary action. "If the Government of India takes the initiative, we would be more than happy. But if they fail to do so, we will not let this vacuum continue," the bench stated to Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who was representing a separate case.
Justice Surya Kant pointed out that there is a lack of regulations in place and the misuse of these platforms, particularly by so-called YouTube channels, is a cause for concern. In a previous case, the court granted protection from arrest to podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, also known as BeerBiceps, for his comments on a YouTube show.
The court strongly condemned Allahbadia's remarks, stating, "There is something dirty in his mind which has been vomited on the YouTube show." It added, "The words you have chosen are unacceptable and would make parents, daughters, sisters, and even your own brother feel ashamed."
The bench stressed on the responsibility of content creators to be mindful of their words and the impact it can have on society. It urged for stricter regulations to be put in place to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
