The state government of Bhubaneswar has announced its plans to introduce the Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana program by the end of February 2025. According to Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling, the initiative aims to provide health insurance coverage to the citizens of the state. This includes a coverage of Rs 10 lakh per year for women beneficiaries and up to Rs 5 lakh for men, allowing them to avail cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals.
In addition, the state's existing Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana will also be integrated with the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This integration will be done through e-KYC database, allowing for a smooth issuance of health cards. This will enable approximately 30,000 empanelled hospitals, both in and outside the state, to provide accessible healthcare services to the beneficiaries, as shared by the minister.
An estimated 3.5 crore beneficiaries will be covered by these two health schemes, according to Mahaling. He also revealed that a team from the Central government has already visited the state to ensure a seamless implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Furthermore, the state government is dedicated to boosting the healthcare sector by increasing the number of medical and nursing colleges in the upcoming year.
A memorandum of understanding is in the works between the Centre and the state to facilitate the implementation of these two schemes. It is noteworthy that in the budget for the financial year 2024-25, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the Finance portfolio, had allocated a budget of Rs 500 crore for the execution of the Ayushman Bharat program. This signifies the government's commitment towards providing better healthcare facilities to its citizens.
