Idris and Sabrina Elba are starting a sustainable city project on Sherbro Island in Sierra Leone.

Idris Elba and Sabrina Elba, a power couple known for their acting and philanthropic endeavors, have recently announced their latest investment in a project focused on ecological sustainability and economic growth on Sherbro Island, located in Sierra Leone. According to National Geographic, the couple hopes that this initiative will serve as a model for future development projects across the continent. With Idris' father hailing from Sierra Leone and Sabrina's mother from Somalia, Sabrina has personally experienced and overcome the negative stereotypes often associated with being African while growing up in Canada.

This has fueled her passion for changing the narrative and showcasing Africa in a more authentic and positive light. She stated, "We wanted to see Africa represented the way that we knew it to be. We wanted to change the storytelling." Idris, who was raised in London, first heard about Sherbro Island from a close family friend many years ago.

At the time, he didn't give it much thought, but it stayed in the back of his mind. However, during a trip to Sierra Leone in 2019 as ambassadors for the International Fund for Agricultural Development, Idris had a pivotal realization. Together, the couple saw an opportunity to create something more significant and long-lasting than just a luxury holiday destination.

As Sabrina explained, their goal is to shift the narrative from one of aid to one of investment. Already involved in various philanthropic efforts, such as supporting education and hunger-relief in Africa and advocating for at-risk youth in the U.K., Idris recently earned a knighthood for his contributions. After visiting Sherbro Island, he and Sabrina decided to unify their initiatives under the Elba Hope Foundation, which includes empowering small-scale farmers in Sierra Leone.

Their focus on sustainable farming, cooperative development, and access to credit for cocoa and cashew farmers requires not only financial support but also time, training, education, and investment. Marsha Reid, the executive director of the foundation, emphasized the importance of providing rural communities with the tools and resources they need to support themselves. Sabrina explained that their work on the island centers around promoting sustainable farming practices that protect the environment while also empowering the local communities.

However, their efforts have now expanded to include the Hope Power Project, a three-year initiative aimed at providing electricity and wireless connectivity to the island. This project is seen as a foundation for future green development, with the ultimate goal of turning Sherbro into a self-sustaining, renewable-powered "eco-city." Idris expressed his hope that their work on Sherbro Island will serve as an example for other public figures, showing them that they can do more than just lend their name to a cause. He believes that by actively participating and working towards a goal, they can become a vital part of a working engine for change.

In other news, the talented actor recently received a knighthood from King Charles III for his philanthropic efforts and contributions to society. However, Idris is not one to rest on his laurels and is constantly looking for ways to make a positive impact and inspire others. As he pondered the future, he asked, "Do we want to continue building structures that harm our environment, or do we want to create cities that nourish it?

What lessons do we want to pass on to the next generation, and can Sherbro Island be a blueprint for that?"
