Darci Khan is making history as the only student from an HBCU to be accepted into the WWE Next In Line program. News 4 Washington reported that the program is designed to help college athletes from any sport transition into the world of professional wrestling. Khan, a senior track star and art major at Howard University, was one of the 14 applicants selected from the 2021 cohort.
Khan's love for track was not one that came naturally - her mother forced her to join in high school. Despite her initial hesitation, Khan had a knack for the sport and the joy of winning eventually led her to continue. Now, she is ready to take on a new challenge in wrestling.
Khan is excited to represent HBCUs and young Black women in the program. “I’ve always wanted to represent young Black women. I’ve always wanted to represent HBCUs,” she told News 4. With her background in gymnastics and cheerleading, Khan is confident in her ability to perform as a wrestler. “I actually am not nervous at all. I feel like I would be a great wrestler. Because I feel like I have the dramatics. I have the skills,” she added.
The program provides student athletes with access to resources such as media training, live event promotion, and the state-of-the-art WWE Performance Center in Orlando. After completing the program, participants are eligible to apply for a contract with WWE. Khan is ready to take on the challenge and prove her strength as an athlete.
Khan's acceptance into the program is a sign of the possibilities and opportunities available to HBCU students. As the only student selected from an HBCU, Khan is sure to make her mark in the wrestling world and inspire other athletes to pursue their dreams.
