Marlon Wayans opened up about his eldest child, Kai, 23, and their gender identity during an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show. The White Chicks actor said he has gone through a transition of his own, from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance.
Wayans is now hoping to connect with other parents who may be struggling with similar issues. He said, “I think there’s a lot of parents out there that need that message and I know I’m dealing with it.” He is working on a stand-up show, with the working titles Rainbow Child or Skittles, to address these issues.
Wayans admitted that he does sometimes get his son’s pronouns wrong, but that he is trying and his son appreciates it. He said, “They know. They know I love them. They see me try and they’re like, ‘I’m happy’. I gotta respect their wishes and as a parent I just want my kids to be free – free in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves.”
He also shared an emotional Instagram post in 2019, celebrating his son with the caption, “Happy pride to my pride and joy. I wouldn’t change one effing thing about you. Love you to the moon around the sun through the galaxies and back again.”
Marlon’s revelation comes after other celebrities, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Dwyane Wade, also spoke out about accepting their children who are transgender. He noted that it was a difficult transition for him but that he loves his son “unconditionally”. He concluded by saying, “The more you know yourself, the more you live your truth, the happier your existence.”
