On Nov 10th, 2023, students from South Grand Prairie High School paid their respects to the veterans of the U.S. Military by visiting the Antioch Life Park Cemetery. This graveyard had been neglected for decades and was in stark contrast to the DFW National Cemetery, located on the other side of Mountain Creek Lake.
In an effort to restore the cemetery, a fundraiser was organized last year, providing new headstones for unmarked graves. The Texas cemetery wrote on Facebook, “Saturday, September 4th, 10 am to noon. Cemetery Action Day. Meet, fix, greet, refresh, clean, laugh, serve the community. Antioch will provide tools, equipment and refreshments. Help us take care of Grand Prairie history!”
To help with further improvements, a GoFundMe campaign was launched in 2020 by Daryl Clark. The goal of the fundraiser was to secure proper maintenance for the Antioch Life Park Cemetery. The campaign managed to reach $1,760 of its $1,000 goal, with many donors sharing their thoughts and gratitude for the veterans. Cindy Hicks commented, “Veterans are heroes”, and Teresa B wrote, “Veterans have earned better treatment. Please donate and share. Thanks.”
Despite the generous donations, additional funds are still needed. The money will help provide grave monuments for those that did not receive them, and fix the markers for those who did. If enough funds are received, more of the cemetery’s operating revenue can be used to improve amenities and services for those who are yet to be buried there, and for those that come to visit them.
