Imagine being at a renowned golf course in North Carolina, where many legendary players have left their mark. The atmosphere is electric as the crowd eagerly awaits the arrival of Willie Mack III, a name not yet familiar to most in the sport. However, that is about to change as he makes his first major championship appearance at the U.S. Open, held at the prestigious Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
At 35 years old, Willie has been a professional golfer since graduating from Bethune-Cookman University in 2011. He has seven PGA Tour starts under his belt and last year, he even had full playing status on the Korn Ferry Tour. However, the majority of his career has been spent on the lower-level mini-tours. But all his hard work and dedication finally paid off when he won a playoff at a U.S. Open qualifier, earning him a coveted spot at this prestigious major.
In a recent interview with Golf.com, Willie opened up about his golf journey, a true testament to his perseverance and strength in the face of adversity. Born in Flint, Michigan, he learned the game from his father, Willie Jr. However, he reveals that there is only one golf course left in his hometown. Despite this, Willie's passion for the sport only grew stronger.
"When I first turned pro, I won the money list on the Florida Pro Tour," Willie shared. "It was the last year you could go right to the PGA Tour through Q-School, and I missed the final stage by two strokes. And then after that, I don't know if I kind of thought it was easy because I was playing so well, but things just started going in the opposite direction." Just when he had tasted success, setbacks came knocking. But Willie didn't let that stop him. He embraced a nomadic lifestyle, determined to chase his dream of making it big in the world of golf.
"I don't even know how it started. I just know my mom didn't really know all the details of that. My dad knew where I was every night. I think moms, they kind of worry more than dads, so she probably wouldn't have been too happy or tried to get me to come home," he revealed. Willie also shared the sacrifices he had to make to follow his passion. "In the winter, you clearly can't play golf in Michigan, so I just stuck it out, and I'm glad I did," he said. Many nights were spent in his black Ford Mustang with tinted windows, but Willie's story is not just about the hardships he faced. It's a celebration of his resilience and determination to overcome any obstacle. He is an inspiration to others, especially as one of the few Black players in golf. Inspired by the great Tiger Woods, Willie hopes to encourage more people to take up the sport.
It's not just about personal goals for Willie. He is also determined to drive diversity in the sport. As the National Links Trust aims to spark interest in golf among Black youth, Willie is using his platform to make a difference. He wants to see more diversity in the sport and hopes to inspire others to take up golf, just like Tiger Woods inspired him. Willie's journey is a shining example of how hard work, perseverance, and passion can lead to success, and he is just getting started.
