During the filming of an episode of Frasier, beloved actor David Hyde Pierce experienced a scary fall and had to be rushed to the hospital. Fans will fondly remember him as the perfect Niles Crane throughout all 11 seasons of the original sitcom, which aired from 1993 to 2004. The show followed Frasier Crane's return to his hometown of Seattle where he reconnects with his family. Frasier was a spin-off of Cheers and recently made a comeback on Paramount+, but David has yet to reprise his role in the reboot.
The 65-year-old actor delighted viewers with his comedic physical performances, such as the infamous Valentine's Day episode where he accidentally burned his finger while ironing and then set the sofa on fire. However, executive producer Joe Keenan revealed that behind the scenes, things weren't always so lighthearted. In fact, David suffered a bad injury during the filming of a season 10 episode.
In a recent interview with The Agency for the show's 30-year anniversary, Joe was asked if there were any accidents on set during the more physical scenes. He recalled, "Yeah. I wasn't there – it was season [10] and David was all wrapped up for a spa. He fell off the table and hit his head, and had to be taken to the hospital. There was a huge anxiety."
Luckily, David was okay, but it could have been much worse. The incident occurred during the season 10 episode "Door Jam," which aired in January 2003. In the episode, Frasier and Niles "accidentally" intercept a neighbor's invitation to a luxury spa and treat themselves to pampering sessions. However, their greed gets the best of them when they discover a premium gold tier and try to get themselves included on the list, leading to a desperate competition for an even more exclusive level.
For viewers familiar with Frasier's extravagant spending habits, this trip to a fancy spa may seem like nothing. After all, we've seen him spend a fortune on sherry, priceless art, and designer suits while living on the salary of a part-time radio host. Executive producer Joe also addressed the question of how Frasier managed to accumulate such wealth, putting to rest fan speculation. "It's funny, Frasier's level of fame fluctuated madly," he joked. "He's either having the whole town turn out at the Space Needle for his 1,000th episode, or he can't scare up five people for a fan club."
"We think Frasier made a lot of money in private practice in Boston, and he has investments," Joe explained. "What we imagined to be the salary of a local radio personality was perhaps a little bit inflated." He also compared Frasier's lifestyle to that of his brother Niles, saying, "On the other hand, when you looked at Niles and his house with Maris, this baronial mansion that Niles lived in, Frasier's apartment didn't seem all that impressive."
Despite Frasier's luxurious apartment, which viewers will remember as the epitome of upper-class living, Joe revealed that the set was actually quite small and narrow. "You were surprised at how much smaller it was to navigate than it looked on camera, and how narrow some of the passages were," he shared. "His dining room only seated four people...That apartment, without that view [of the Seattle Space Needle], would not seem that astonishing. It was the view that made it seem fabulous."
Although David's injury was a scary moment on set, it's clear that the cast and crew of Frasier were a close-knit family. Joe and his co-producer Chris reminisced about the time they were on the lot when David fell, and how everyone was concerned for his well-being. It's moments like these that show the true bond between the actors and their dedication to creating a successful and beloved sitcom.
