Four children tragically died in a house fire as helpless neighbors attempted to put it out with extinguishers.
The little town of Somers, Connecticut, was rocked by tragedy this week when a devastating house fire claimed the lives of four children. The ages of the victims were five, six, eight, and twelve. This tragedy occurred around 10.20pm on Tuesday evening at a two-family home on Quality Avenue.

Chief John Roache of the Somers Fire Department reported that neighbors had attempted to put out the blaze using extinguishers, but ‘the volume of fire was just too great at that time’. When firefighters arrived at the duplex, they found it fully engulfed and had to break down the doors to access the building.

First Selectman Tim Keeney reported that the firefighters faced additional difficulty in accessing the house, as the doors had been barricaded with items. He expressed his deep sorrow for the town, stating that ‘It's a tremendous loss for the town.’

The fire started on the side of the duplex where the four young victims were found. Eight people were living in that side of the building, and seven were home at the time, including an adult. Thankfully, the adult and two other children were able to escape, but the four victims were found dead in the home. One firefighter was treated for burns, and the home was a total loss.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but it is not believed to be criminal in nature. The surviving family members have requested that any donations be made to the Somers Angel fund. This tragedy comes just a few months after a similar one in Brooklyn, New York, when a landlord allegedly set an apartment on fire because his tenants did not pay rent, forcing the parents to throw their four children to the ground, below.

Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy, and we hope that they will find the strength to move forward.
