Keisha Buchanan, one of the members of the popular girl group Sugababes, recently opened up about a shocking experience she went through as a teenager. At the young age of 16, Keisha was kidnapped and held captive for several hours. She bravely shared this information on the Live, Laugh, Luke with Luke Hamnett podcast, where she also talked about her time with the Sugababes and their eventual reunion.
During the time of her kidnapping, the Sugababes were still a relatively new group and were just starting to gain popularity. Keisha was not allowed to take any time off from her busy schedule, which consisted of shows and studio sessions. It was around the time when she was supposed to be taking her GCSE exams, a crucial point in her education, that she was snatched after school.
As a result, her parents made the difficult decision to pull her out of school to help her cope with the trauma. In her interview, Keisha revealed that she had been taken by someone and held captive for a few hours. As a young teenager, this was a terrifying experience for her.
Her parents decided to change her education to a different type, as they felt that she needed to focus on her recovery. This meant that she was unable to take her GCSE exams and had to finish her education in a different way. Despite the traumatic experience, Keisha had to quickly get back into promoting the group's first single.
Keisha also shared that she underwent therapy to help her process the kidnapping and has become an advocate for others who have been through similar experiences. She and her bandmates Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy wanted to return to school, but only Siobhán was allowed to go back. Keisha claimed that their school was rude and did not allow her and Mutya to return, saying that they thought they were going to be pop stars and wanted to see what would happen.
In her tell-all book, Keisha plans to go into more detail about the kidnapping and the infamous lineup changes within the Sugababes. The group shot to fame with their first single, "Overload," but each member was eventually replaced by Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah, and Jade Ewen. In 2011, the group split as there were no original members left.
However, in 2021, the original trio reunited and reclaimed the Sugababes name, performing at events such as Glastonbury and Mighty Hoopla. Reflecting on their journey, Keisha believes that it was by God's grace that they were able to overcome the challenges they faced, including her kidnapping. She feels grateful to be standing today, despite the things they have been through behind the scenes.
