Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is speaking out against federal prosecutors, claiming they have mishandled his racketeering case. According to reports, prosecutors have been relentless in their pursuit of the money Kilpatrick owes from his conviction in 2013. While Kilpatrick was found guilty of the charges, he argues that prosecutors have engaged in their own corrupt behavior by bullying his family.
In a document obtained by The Detroit News, Kilpatrick is asking for a release of the $13,000 hold on his frozen accounts. This money is being held to pay off the remaining $823,649 he owes in restitution. However, Kilpatrick insists that the money does not belong to him.
It is actually held in an account belonging to Pathfinder Consulting Firm LLC, where his wife LaTicia serves as resident agent. The firm also owns a large home, totaling almost 4,000 square feet. Despite Kilpatrick's claims, prosecutors maintain that the money and home actually belong to him and are therefore subject to federal seizure.
However, Kilpatrick is pushing back against this assertion, stating that the money is not up for grabs by the prosecutors. In addition, Kilpatrick reveals that he and his wife have had to remove their children from school due to federal pressure. He also claims that leaked documents have hindered potential speaking engagements, leaving him in dire financial straits.
Kilpatrick writes, "The freezing of this account and the lack of access to my financial resources for nearly four months is a travesty of justice. Not only have we had to remove our children from school, but the damaging effects of leaked documents and discussions about sealed court filings have also made it difficult to secure speaking engagements." He accuses the prosecutors of maliciously trying to reclaim the money he owes, arguing that his wife and her finances are not responsible for paying off the restitution. He goes as far as to say that their actions are similar to extortion as they attempt to freeze any assets associated with him.
"Laticia is not under the jurisdiction of the federal court, she has never committed a crime, and she is not currently involved in any legal matters at the state or federal level," Kilpatrick adds. "This is nothing more than bullying, and it is closer to extortion." Kilpatrick also reveals that he made a secret deal with the federal government to repay the stolen taxpayer dollars, a deal that has now been made public as his legal battle continues. This comes after Kilpatrick's endorsement of Donald Trump for president, who later pardoned him.
