Five former Congress corporators from Dharavi joined the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday, signaling the start of the Shinde camp making inroads into Congress’s strongholds in the city. This follows the break up between the Thackerays and the Shinde camp last year in June, when the Shinde camp inducted 15 ex-corporators from the Shiv Sena.
The five former corporators who resigned from the party membership include Pushpa Koli from Sion Koliwada, Bhaskar Shetti, Babbu Khan, Kunal Mane from Dharavi, and Vajid Kurashi from Chandivali. They have attributed their decision to join the Shinde camp to Mumbai Regional Congress President Varsha Gaikwad’s “autocratic style” of working.
This latest defection from the Congress party is seen as a blow to its unit in the city. The Shinde camp is likely to induct more former corporators before the upcoming municipal elections, in order to be in a better bargaining position with the BJP and NCP.
In related news, CM Shinde supporters have called for action against senior party leader Ramdas Kadam in response to the news. They believe that Kadam's actions and statements are damaging the Shiv Sena and that he should be removed from the party to protect its reputation. It remains to be seen what action the party takes in regards to this ongoing situation.
