It was a tragic and unfortunate incident. Gerardo Hernandez-Rodriguez was spending the beautiful Saturday afternoon hiking near Multnomah Falls with his family, consisting of his wife and five children.
Suddenly, Hernandez-Rodriguez stumbled and fell 200 feet down an embankment. His wife quickly called 911, and his family members were not in the same area at the time and were not sure where he landed.
U.S. Forest Service rangers and other local agencies responded to the scene and located his body within around 45 minutes right below the spot where he had been seen falling. He was sadly declared dead at the scene.
Multnomah County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Plock expressed his sympathy, saying, "Mom, dad, five kids were all here enjoying a beautiful day. And unfortunately, a tragic accident happened. At one point on the trail, the father slipped and fell and fell down the side of an embankment."
The incident was made worse by the fact that it happened on the first major holiday weekend of the summer. Corbett County Fire Chief Rick Wunsch stated, "That's not the way we want to start our season."
Authorities believe that alcohol impairment was a factor in the incident. It was a tragic accident that shouldn't have happened, and our hearts go out to the Hernandez-Rodriguez family.
