Klodian Zefi, a 23-year-old man from Paston, Cambridgeshire, has been given a 10 month prison sentence after police found £220,000 worth of marijuana in his home.
On the morning of 26 June, the police received a 999 call about a potential firearm. In response, they sent armed officers to Zefi's house. After searching the property, they found no gun but did uncover 261 cannabis plants and half a kilo of cannabis. It was all stashed in the loft - and that's where they also found Zefi, hiding in the attic area.
Video footage released by Cambridgeshire Constabulary shows the dramatic moment when the officers confronted Zefi. An officer is heard confirming on his radio that there has been ‘positive contact’ with a suspect in the loft area, and Zefi is then asked to come downstairs and put his hands up in the air.
At Peterborough Crown Court on Monday, Zefi pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and was sentenced to 10 months in prison. The charge of being in possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence was dropped.
Detective Constable Owen Howard, who led the investigation, commented on the case. He said: “This was a professional and organised setup that would have led to a significant criminal financial gain. Tackling drugs is a priority for the force, as they often attract significant violence and cause misery to our communities in the form of anti-social behaviour.”
The cultivation of cannabis is a criminal offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. This includes caring for cannabis plants, such as nurturing, feeding and watering them. Anyone found guilty of cannabis cultivation or production can be charged with a number of offences, with the maximum sentence for cultivation being 14 years imprisonment.
