A junior doctor in Bhopal attempted suicide and has been admitted to the ICU.
It has been three days since Dr. Bal Saraswati, a junior doctor and PG student at Gandhi Medical College (GMC) of Bhopal, took her own life by injecting anaesthesia. But the tragic story doesn't end here. On Thursday, another doctor, a graduate of the same college, attempted to take his own life.

According to Dean of Hamidia Hospital, Dr Arvind Rai, the man in question – Dr. Kartik Parashar – had been suffering from depression for some time and had been taking medication to manage it. On Thursday, he consumed an antidepressant in large amounts and was quickly taken to the Hamidia Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. Although his condition is stable, he is still being kept under watch.

Dr. Kuldeep Gupta, media spokesperson for the Junior Doctors' Association of Bhopal, informed the Free Press that Dr. Parashar is a native of Gwalior and had graduated from GMC this year. He had been residing in the Lalghati area of Bhopal. Dr. Gupta went on to say that Dr Parashar had even posted a status on WhatsApp, expressing his thoughts on the toxic culture of GMC Bhopal. In the message, he wrote, ‘2 suicides in 7 months, #GMC, BHOPAL #SHAME’. He also called for the punishment of those responsible for both the suicide cases.

It is worth mentioning that seven months ago, another PG student at GMC Bhopal named Aakansha Maheshwari had taken her own life in a similar manner to Dr. Bal Saraswati. She had even left a suicide note, mentioning the immense amount of stress put on her by GMC authorities.

The Koh-e-fiza police station has still not been officially informed of the incident. Station in-charge Vijay Singh Sisodia mentioned that no complaint has been registered in the case and thus, they have yet to begin an investigation.
