September 11th 2023.
It has been 22 years since one of the most devastating tragedies in U.S. history occurred. On September 11th, a ceremony will be held in Lower Manhattan to honor the victims and heroes of that day. The ceremony, which will be streamed live on television and mobile devices, will start at 8:25 a.m. ET with the reading of the names of those who lost their lives.
On that fateful day, members of an Al-Qaeda terrorist group hijacked four planes. Two of these planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the iconic World Trade Center in New York City, causing both buildings to collapse and taking the lives of close to 3,000 people. Shortly after, another plane crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington D.C., and the last one was forced into an open field in Pennsylvania by heroic passengers.
The tragedy didn't end there. As the dust settled on the ground in Manhattan, hundreds of thousands of people were unknowingly breathing in toxic air and debris. In the years since, hundreds of people have died from post-9/11 related illnesses, including 341 FDNY members.
To remember those who died at the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77, a memorial service is being held in Arlington, Virginia. This event is free and open to the public. Additionally, George Mason University will be hosting the 11th Annual Mason Nation 9/11 Day of Service, where various service projects will be available for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to participate in until 5 p.m.
Finally, two virtual events are being held. Military veteran Ben King from Armor Down is hosting a morning mindfulness and meditation session. Busboys & Poets in Hyattsville, Maryland is also hosting a veterans open mic night for those who can't attend any of the honoring events during the day. Everyone is encouraged to share their stories of courage.
