"Wait, hold on a minute. Did you just say what I think you said?" Cain looked at Ruby in disbelief. "But isn't your wife having brain surgery today?" Ruby's words hit him like a ton of bricks, making him pause and reflect on the gravity of the situation.
It all started off so well. The episode had promised to be a heart-wrenching one, centered around Moira's much-anticipated surgery. Even the viewers were on edge, anxious for the beloved character's well-being. I remember watching it with a room full of journalists and Emmerdale enthusiasts at a recent screening, and you could hear a pin drop.
The dream sequence was a beautifully filmed surprise, giving fans a chance to see Moira reunite with her deceased daughter, Holly. It was a powerful moment, sensitively written and portrayed by the talented Natalie J Robb. It was a short but impactful scene, leaving us all in awe.
But then, things took a turn for the worse. As Moira struggled with the decision to stay with her daughter or return home to her husband, she came to and found Cain waiting for her. It seemed like a resolution, a new chapter for the couple after almost a decade of turmoil. A chance for a new future, filled with hope and love.
But alas, the episode took a dark turn. When I read the synopsis beforehand about Cain's self-destructive behavior, I was on board. Jeff Hordley always delivers a stellar performance, and it was in line with his character. So, although I didn't like it, I could understand why he wasn't at the hospital during Moira's surgery. He hit the bottle, lashed out, and even punched Jimmy King in the face – all understandable given the circumstances.
But then, there was that moment – the one that left a lump in my throat and seemed to have resonated badly with the viewers as well. Suddenly, Cain and Ruby were in each other's arms, without any buildup or justification. It was a shock, leaving us all in disbelief. And now, it seems like social media is exploding with fury over this unexpected twist.
And I can't help but wonder – why? Was it really necessary to sacrifice the trust and love between Coira (as the couple is affectionately known) for a short-term, salacious plot twist? It seems like we have traded the warmth, power, and surprise of Moira's surgery for yet another cheating scandal. Something that will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on their relationship and on the viewers' minds.
And let's not forget – this wasn't the only storyline going on in the episode. Moira and Cain's troubled past, as well as Ruby's own family drama, were already enough to keep us on the edge of our seats. Did we really need to add this betrayal into the mix? What does it ultimately do for the characters except damage them in the long run?
Don't get me wrong – I love these characters. Cain, Moira, and Ruby are some of my favorites on the show, and their interactions and dynamics have always been exceptional. Beth Cordingly's portrayal of Ruby has been a revelation, and she has quickly become one of my favorite new TV characters. I'm excited to see where her story will take her, as it promises to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
But this particular plot twist has left me at a loss. I can't seem to find an angle that justifies it or makes me root for the characters involved. It feels like a misfire in an otherwise well-written and executed episode. But, as every soap has its off-moments, I hope that this will be resolved soon so we can get back to loving these three complex and fascinating characters.
