The Election Commission of Bhopal has introduced a new facility called ‘vote from home’ for elderly people and differently-abled persons above the age of 80. While some are unaware of this facility or unable to register themselves, others are choosing not to opt for it.

Om Mehta, 84, a patron of Hindu Utsav Samiti, was informed about this facility but chose to vote at the booth near his home. He said, “Till I can walk, why should I use this facility? Let those who are unable to walk, avail it.” He believes that it is important to elect a good representative, and that is why one should vote.

Usha Johri, 82, a resident of Professor’s Colony, is determined to vote. She said, “Vote to doongi,” emphasizing that every vote counts and if one wants to see the government of one’s choice in power, one should vote. She was referring to the freedom fight against the British Raj, which resulted in Indians being able to elect their own government.

Habib Nazar, a 103-year-old freedom fighter, echoed Usha’s view and said that he plans to exercise his franchise. Unfortunately, he does not know about the ‘vote from home’ facility. Similarly, Bithika Bhattacharya, 93, a resident of MLAs Quarters in New Market, is also unaware of this facility and is determined to cast her ballot.

Rishiraj, 28, a visually challenged poet, knows about the facility but could not get himself registered. He said he was not in the city for the past many days and that officials might have found his home locked. Nonetheless, he will be voting at the polling booth.

Meanwhile, the temperature in Bhopal has taken a dip and recorded the lowest temperature of October at 14.7° Celsius. People are advised to wear warm clothes and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
