Detroit's historic Women's Clubhouse receives $75K grant to preserve its legacy.
The Detroit News reported that a grant of $75,000 has been issued to preserve a historic Black landmark in Detroit – the Detroit Association of Women’s Club. The History of Equal Rights Grant, which is funded by the Detroit Historic Designation Advisory Board, will be used to preserve the building which was formerly known as the Detroit Association of Colored Women’s Club when it was founded in 1921.

Janese Chapman, the director of the Detroit Historic Designation Advisory Board, explained that the club was created by merging eight Black women’s clubs to address the social and welfare issues of Detroit’s African American community. She added that the headquarters was purchased in 1941 under the presidency of civil rights activist Rosa Slade Gragg.

The Detroit Association of Women’s Club also had to change the building address due to laws that prohibited Black residents in the area. Chapman revealed that the Club was originally planned to be located between Ferry and Brush Streets, but due to regulations, they had to change the address to a different one nearby.

The grant from the National Parks Service will also be used to apply the building for the National Register of Historic Places. According to Chapman, the grant is aimed at making sure that the history of America is being told through the point of view of underrepresented communities.

This grant marks the first time the city of Detroit has received a History of Equal Rights grant, a contribution funded by the federal Historic Preservation Fund. This grant will be a huge help in preserving the Detroit Association of Women’s Club, a symbol of hope and progress for African Americans in Detroit.
