The highly anticipated hero shooter, Concord, has unfortunately not managed to take flight. Developed by Firewalk Studios and published by Sony, the game has had a disastrous opening week, failing to make an impact on the PlayStation Store.
Despite being a competently made game, heavily inspired by Overwatch, Concord has struggled to find an audience since its launch last week. This is a major disappointment for PlayStation, as Concord was one of their many live service projects in development. However, based on its underwhelming performance, their plans may need to be reevaluated.
Since its release on PlayStation 5 and PC last Friday, Concord has only managed to reach a peak of 697 concurrent players on Steam. To put this into perspective, when Helldivers 2 launched in February, it achieved a peak of 458,709 players. Even Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which is considered a major flop, had more players with 13,459 at its peak.
As of writing this, there are currently only 93 players on Steam, which is a shockingly low number for a game that has been out for seven days. It is possible that the majority of players are on PlayStation 5, but this was not the case for Helldivers 2, where most players were on PC. Regardless, Concord is currently ranked 56th on the US PlayStation Store, and even lower on the UK store at 78th.
The game's developer, Firewalk Studios, has already outlined their post-launch roadmap for the first two seasons of Concord. This will include new maps and character cosmetics, but it is uncertain how long the game will be supported beyond that.
It is difficult to pinpoint the exact reasons for Concord's failure, but a combination of poor reception during its reveal in May and the fact that it is not free-to-play may have contributed to its disastrous launch. While some may argue that there is an oversaturation of hero shooters in the market, it is interesting to note that Overwatch 2 has actually seen an increase in popularity on Steam in August. This suggests that other games such as Marvel Rivals and Concord may have unintentionally driven players back to the well-established hero shooter from Blizzard.
Over the past month, Overwatch 2 has seen a rise in players on Steam, from 46,000 to around 59,000. It remains to be seen whether Sony will continue to support Concord and try to turn its fortunes around, but it is unlikely that any major changes will happen in the near future.

In other news, developer Firewalk Studios has stated that they want players to remember that they own Concord, not the other way around, as they announce the removal of battle passes from the game.
