Craig Revel Horwood has defended Phillip Schofield over the recent This Morning row. The Strictly judge believes the 62-year-old presenter should be left alone and that lying to his family, colleagues and fans should be put into perspective. He said, "Yes, he lied to his colleagues, which is wrong, but he wanted to protect himself and his former lover. It pales in comparison to a war, where innocent people are dying. It's not like he's murdered anyone. How many CEOs have extra-marital affairs with secretaries? A lot. It doesn't make sense to me that it became quite as huge as it did. Leave him alone now, I say."
The reaction to Phillip Schofield's announcement was met with mixed emotions from his former This Morning colleagues. Holly Willoughby said she felt "shaken, troubled and let down," but also admitted that what he did was wrong. Alison Hammond broke down in tears live on the show after Schofield suggested he'd had suicidal thoughts. Meanwhile, Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan are among the stars defending the presenter, calling for the ‘witch-hunt’ against him to end.
With his 40-year career in television now over, Schofield spoke to The Sun about his current state of mind. “I’ve lost everything. It’s all gone. Telly was my safe space, the one thing I loved. Now I don’t know if I will ever work on telly again.” He’s since shut down speculation that he’ll be making his TV comeback on TalkTV.
ITV boss Dame Carolyn McCall will appear before a parliamentary committee on Wednesday to answer questions about the This Morning row. We can only hope that the focus can now move away from Schofield and be directed to more important matters.
