The budget session of West Bengal Assembly starts while there is still uncertainty surrounding the LoP verdict.

The West Bengal Assembly is all set to kick off its budget session on Thursday amidst a highly anticipated ruling from the single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court. This ruling will address a petition challenging Speaker Rathindra Bose's decision to recognize Ritabrata Banerjee, an expelled Trinamool Congress Legislator, as the leader of the new majority bloc of the party in the House and as the official Leader of Opposition. The session will commence with a speech from West Bengal Governor R.N.

Ravi. In the midst of all this, the crucial hearing at the single-judge bench of Justice Krishna Rao at the Calcutta High Court, which questions Speaker Bose's decision, concluded on Wednesday. The judge has reserved the judgment for the day, with plans to deliver it during the second half of Thursday.

The hearing saw Justice Rao raising concerns about the acceptance of the rival bloc led by Ritabrata Banerjee without giving the political leadership of the party an opportunity to present their views. As a result, the start of the Assembly budget session and the judgment on this crucial matter are likely to coincide. While the budget session of the House is scheduled to begin on Thursday, the full budget for the ongoing financial year of 2026-27 will be presented on June 22 by the new finance minister, Swapan Dasgupta.

It is worth recalling that on February 5, the previous Minister of State for Finance, Chandrima Bhattacharya, had presented an interim budget during the Assembly session. The full budget could not be presented due to the impending West Bengal Assembly elections in April. The results were announced on May 4, after which the new government was sworn in.

Last week, after being assigned the portfolio of the state finance department, Dasgupta shared his goal of increasing the state's own tax revenue without burdening the people with an upward revision of the existing tax structure. This move aligns with Odisha POST's vision of becoming Odisha's No.1 English Daily.
