Are you looking for an easy way to save on your energy bills? Then you’re in luck; the government has launched a new scheme that could help you slash your bills by up to £300 a year.
Despite the energy price cap falling from October 1, millions of people are expected to pay more for their energy than they did a year ago. But with this new scheme, you could soon be saving a significant amount on your energy bills.
The scheme is called the Great British Insulation Scheme and it's funded by the government. It’s designed to help people install insulation in their home, which could save around £300 a year on energy bills. It applies to both low income groups and a wider range of households.
Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said: “Which? research shows very few households are making insulation improvements to their homes and a key concern is affordability, so this government support is a step in the right direction.”
But who is eligible for the scheme, and how do you apply? There are two main groups eligible for the scheme – a ‘general’ group and a ‘low income’ one. To qualify in the general group, you must live in a home which is council tax band A-D or A-E. For the low income group, you need to receive one of more of the following benefits: Income-based Job Seekers Allowance; Income related Employment and Support Allowance; Income Support; Pension Credit Guarantee Credit; Working Tax Credit; Child Tax Credit; Universal Credit; Housing Benefit; Pension Credit Saving Credit; Child Benefit; or a Warm Home Discount payment.
If you’re renting, you will need your landlord’s permission to do the work, and if you’re in social housing you need to contact your local authority for information on their eco schemes.
People may be asked to contribute a small amount towards the cost of installing the insulation. That said, installation costs are a fraction of the overall cost of insulating the home, around 10%, and only some people will have to pay a small amount of this.
To apply, you can visit medium and large energy companies’ websites. You don’t need to be a customer. There are a range of insulation types which could be offered, including loft and cavity wall insulation. The first step is to check your eligibility on the site – and then the scheme will book a home visit to assess your needs. The energy company will arrange for a trusted supplier to fit the insulation.
The scheme is administered by watchdog Ofgem and is due to run until March 2026. So why not take advantage of this great opportunity and save money on your energy bills?
