Could seaweed-based gloves become the next big trend from Japan?
A group of high school students in Tokyo, Japan have recently made headlines for their innovative creation - a pair of seaweed slime gloves. Yes, you read that right, gloves made from seaweed! The trio, Shuhei Otsuka, Takumi Kaneko, and Reo Nishihira, came up with this idea for the Japan Science & Engineering Challenge 2023, and their hard work has definitely paid off.

Their research was focused on alginic acid, a bio-based material found in brown algae and seaweed, which is the main cause of sliminess. Initially, the students had set out to make plastic from this material, but during one of their experiments, one of the students dipped his finger into a solution of sodium alginate - the chosen alginic acid - and then into a liquid solution of calcium chloride. To their surprise, his finger was covered in a gel-like layer, which gave them the idea to create gloves that could perfectly fit anyone's hands.

To ensure that their gloves were strong enough for a range of tasks, the students surveyed over 120 workers from various industries such as restaurants, nursing care, and others. They wanted to understand the different requirements for gloves in different workplaces. As a result, they were able to create a product with a high water content that not only protected the wearer's hands from heat and cold but also felt comfortable and breathable.

But the most impressive aspect of these gloves is that they are completely recyclable. Once they have been used, they can be soaked in a liquid solution of sodium carbonate, which turns them back into their original state of sodium alginate. This makes them not only environmentally friendly but also sustainable.

The students' hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. They were awarded the Denka prize, a major award from JSEC, and even got the opportunity to visit a research facility of Denka Co - a Japanese chemical company that awards the prize. Nobuyuki Yoshino, Denka's managing executive officer, commended the students for their exceptional work and encouraged them to continue experimenting and making mistakes in their pursuit of progress.

Mr. Kaneko, one of the students, expressed his initial doubts about their project but was motivated to continue by the other students' enthusiasm and wonder at their experiments. Mr. Otsuka, on the other hand, has big hopes for their invention. He aspires to improve the thickness and strength of the gloves and even plans to develop commercial products like antimicrobial gloves and moisturizing gloves.

It is truly inspiring to see young minds come up with such ingenious ideas and work towards creating a better and more sustainable future. The seaweed slime gloves created by these students are not only a testament to their hard work and creativity but also a step towards a greener and cleaner planet. We can't wait to see what else they come up with in the future!
