Celebrate the 163rd birthday of 'Gurudev' with a cutting-edge program.
In the town of Rourkela, there is a special organization called 'Geetimalya' which is dedicated to music, specifically the works of Rabindranath Tagore. This year, on the 163rd anniversary of Tagore's birth, the members of Geetimalya have decided to celebrate in a unique and innovative way. While Tagore's birthday falls on May 7th, the celebration will actually take place on May 12th.
To commemorate this occasion, the members of Geetimalya will be performing 20 famous Rabindra Sangeet songs simultaneously across the country. This is truly a one-of-a-kind event, as in the past, the organization has only participated in functions held every four years in Kolkata. However, this time, Tagore's birthday will be celebrated in 11 different states.
Mana Chakraborty, a member of Geetimalya, expressed her excitement for this event, stating that it will involve 100 singers in each state, for a total of 1,100 artists. Susmita Naskar, who is coordinating the Odisha part of the event, shared that 103 singers from Odisha will also be participating. The other states and Union Territories taking part in the celebration include Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Telangana.
Naskar shared that the program will begin at 10:30 AM sharp, with all 1,100 artists singing 20 selected songs by Tagore, including the famous 'Ekla chalo re'. She also mentioned that the artists will be singing to track music and there will be no accompanying musicians. The goal is to finish all the songs in just an hour and 30 minutes.
In Rourkela alone, there will be 83 artists participating in the mass singing, with an additional 20 coming from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Naskar informed the media that these artists are currently undergoing training for the event. She also mentioned that while the majority of the singers are Bengalis, there are also several Odias who are learning Rabindra Sangeet.
The practice sessions are being held at various venues in Rourkela, such as Civil Township, Basanti Colony, Koel Nagar, and other areas. Naskar shared that the strategy is to practice five songs at a time, and once those are mastered, they move on to the next five. The final rehearsals will take place on May 11th, once the singers from Cuttack and Bhubaneswar arrive. They will also ensure that the songs are perfectly synced to the track music for a seamless performance.
Overall, the members of Geetimalya are thrilled to be celebrating Tagore's birthday in such a grand and unique manner, and are eagerly looking forward to the event on May 12th.
