At 71 years old, Kevin Beresford, who admits to being the dullest man in Britain, has defied all expectations and created a calendar that celebrates his favourite allotments in Redditch. For years, Kevin had thought gardeners were “weird and dull people”, but he has since changed his mind.
“They’re eco-warriors, they’re resourceful people. Whatever is going round, that’s been discarded, they’ll use. They don’t just grow plants, they’re into bee hives. They’re digging for victory. They’re very relaxing places,” said Kevin.
He saw himself as an “ambassador for the mundane”, and so he began creating calendars featuring car parks, village notice boards, roundabouts, and even one dedicated to footballer Jack Grealish’s calves. Despite not expecting to make thousands off these calendars, Kevin still found purpose in creating them as they covered the cost for printing and allowed him to go out and explore his hometown.
The latest calendar Kevin produced features his top 12 allotments in Redditch, including the one on Astwood Bank with a stunning view of the picturesque Malvern Hills. Kevin said, “It’s fun coming up with different content. I like to capture slice of English life and put that into a format. Artists have always focused on the mundane. Van Gough would paint his pipe on the chair. I am the ambassador of the mundane.”
However, Kevin also revealed that many of the allotments he pictured were “broken into”, with gardeners having to fortify their spaces. He said, “Dolphin Road allotments, this is a sight that is broken into twice a week. Then there’s Church Hill which is broken into twice a week as well. Sturdy gates with huge bits of razor wire to stop people climbing over. This is the sign of the times.” Despite this, Kevin still believes Astwood Bank is the “finest in Redditch” and calls it “like a park.”
