Black professionals reportedly filing lawsuit to stop release of “Freaknik” documentary, claiming it is misrepresentative and offensive.
As we near the 30th anniversary of the iconic 1994 Freaknik celebration, Hulu is set to release a documentary exploring the infamous Spring break festival that swept the '90s and had many in a chokehold. This documentary, executive produced by Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell, will give a new generation the chance to see what exactly went down and led to Freaknik's demise.

However, a group of Black women professionals has expressed their concerns, in the form of a potential lawsuit, claiming that the documentary shows them in an "unflattering light". The Rickey Smiley Morning Show has discussed the possible lawsuit and the debate of fair use that could come into play about the Freaknik footage that is over 25 years old.

Many who attended Freaknik have taken to social media to express their concern about the documentary's release. One woman posted a TikTok that went viral on Twitter with one person claiming that “All the Freaknik aunties scared.” She said in the video, “I’ve been to several Freakniks. 94 was one that I attended. I’m just praying that Jesus be a fence.”

This documentary is an opportunity to shine a light on an important part of history and to show the positive changes that have occurred since then.
