Security experts have noted that the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary and its adjoining forests have long been used by Maoists as hideouts. However, with recent efforts to declare the area largely Maoist-free, the focus has shifted towards wildlife conservation and development.

Following the seizure, the joint team of Komna police and CRPF has intensified patrolling and search operations in suspected hideouts in Dhekunpani and the surrounding forests.
