The Southeast Queens Chamber of Commerce is leading the charge in allowing minorities to take advantage of potentially life-changing opportunities. The chamber is partnering with the Airport Minority Advisory Council (AMAC) to help members become certified for Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) and Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (ACDBE) certifications.
Unfortunately, even if they succeed in obtaining the certifications, people of color are often unable to take advantage of them due to prohibitive costs and assets. ACDBE requires that total assets are not to exceed $1.32 million, but airport developers often require far more than that, particularly in New York.
In response to this, the Southeast Queens Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Matchmaking Holiday Market at their headquarters. The event will match local business enterprises with airport developers in order to provide more opportunities for people of color. The event will be held at 115-42 Sutphin Blvd in Jamaica and is just ten minutes away from JFK Airport.
Dr. Roxanne Simone Lord, president of the SEQ Chamber, commented: "Airport concessions are a great way for people of African descent to make millions. Unfortunately, they are often excluded from playing a role in airport operations. The Southeast Queens Chamber of Commerce is working to change that."
To further this goal, the SEQ Chamber has also created a Giving Fund. The fund will provide grants to members of the chamber to help them reinvest in their businesses and become more successful. Those interested in participating can donate or join the SEQ Chamber, with half of the membership fee going towards the Giving Fund.
