CRPF soldier hurt in explosion while fighting Naxal rebels in Jharkhand.

A brave soldier of the Central Reserve Police Force found himself in a critical condition on Monday after accidentally stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during a mission to combat Naxalites in the dense forests of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand. This incident took place amidst an ongoing search operation by security forces to rid the Chaibasa area of Maoist rebels who have been using the forest as a hideout. The soldier unknowingly activated a pressure-based IED that had been planted along a frequently used forest trail, resulting in a powerful explosion.

The soldier suffered serious injuries and was swiftly evacuated to a specialized medical facility in Ranchi via air transport. The operation in the Saranda forest is still ongoing, with intermittent clashes between security forces and Maoist groups being reported. The use of IEDs by insurgents has become a major challenge, especially in heavily forested regions where detection is a difficult task.

In recent months, Maoist groups have ramped up their use of explosives, especially after suffering significant losses. In January of this year, security forces successfully eliminated 17 Maoists in a major operation in the area, dealing a severe blow to the insurgent network. However, intelligence reports suggest that the Maoists have retaliated by planting a large number of IEDs along forest paths and approach roads as a way to target security personnel.

The Saranda forest region has been the site of multiple IED blasts in the past few weeks. Between February and March alone, there have been three major explosions resulting in the death of one civilian and injuries to two members of the elite COBRA Battalion. On March 1st, an Assistant Commandant of the COBRA unit, Ajay Mallick, was critically injured in a similar explosion during a combing operation in the same area.

In light of Monday's blast, a high alert has been issued for Chaibasa and other areas affected by Naxalite activity. Security forces have intensified their efforts by conducting area domination exercises, route sanitization drills, and thorough search operations to locate and defuse any hidden explosives. The focus of these operations remains on minimizing casualties while simultaneously pressuring the Maoist groups to dismantle their operational capabilities in the region.
