The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) recently put on a masquerade ball to help raise money for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Baltimore area. CBS Baltimore affiliate WJZ News served as the media sponsor, and the Washington chapter of the UNCF presented the event.
The UNCF's website states that the event was meant to bring awareness to the need and benefit of a college education, and to recognize contributions of HBCUs. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott was a special guest, and Morgan State University President Dr. David Wilson and Coppin State University President Dr. Anthony Jenkins were honorary event chairs. The event was DJ'ed by No ID, a Chicago DJ and producer formerly affiliated with Kanye West’s GOOD Music imprint. Honorees included President Emeritus of The University of Maryland Baltimore County, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, and Sashi Brown, president of the Baltimore Ravens.
Held at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor, the black-tie event was a glamorous affair and a great opportunity to support Baltimore HBCUs in need of funds. This was especially important in 2021, when HBCUs in Maryland received a $577 million settlement from the state legislature for intentional underfunding.
Coppin State's Jenkins said of the settlement, “We’re going to use these dollars in a way that helps soften the financial burden that so many of our students are facing,” Jenkins continued. “We know, through those efforts, we will see greater student success, greater retention, and greater graduation rates coming out of the institution.”
The UNCF Baltimore Mayor’s Masked Ball was a successful event, and it will hopefully help Baltimore HBCUs continue to provide quality education for years to come.
