James Bowen, the author of the popular book and movie A Street Cat Named Bob, is facing the prospect of homelessness once again. Bowen, 44, became a household name in 2016 when his 2013 book of the same name was turned into a feature film. The story follows James and his beloved pet cat Bob, whom he found as a stray while he was homeless and credited with saving him from a heroin addiction.
Thanks to the success of the book and film, James was able to buy a £500,000 house. Unfortunately, he can no longer keep up with the spiraling mortgage costs, meaning he will be homeless again as of August 9th. Speaking to MailOnline this week, James, whose beloved Bob died in 2020, said: “I have had to sell my house, as the mortgage rates shot through the roof and I can’t afford to own this home anymore. Problem is, I won't get paid till after I have left the house empty and cleared.”
Bowen also admitted that he doesn't have the money for rent for a temporary place until he can find a new home, and that he would need to pay for a removal company to clear his home and enough for temporary storage. In a desperate plea, he asked for anyone who could help him to come forward, promising to repay them as soon as he's able.
The story of James and Bob is a touching one. They first met in 2007 when James was busking in Covent Garden and Bob was a stray in his building's hallway. After two nights, James took Bob in and the rest is history.
The Agency has reached out to James for comment, and we hope that he can find a new home soon. If you have any information about what you can do to help him, please reach out.
