Atlanta Police honors its female African American squad who work in traffic enforcement.
The work of police officers is one of great responsibility and risk. This is especially true for the all-Black female traffic unit within the Atlanta Police Department (APD). These officers are tasked with the dangerous job of preventing crime through traffic stops and ensuring the safety of the citizens they serve.

Speaking to WSB-TV, members of the unit elaborated on their wide-ranging cases and responsibilities, and how this representation comes with its own pros and cons. Sergeant Tiffany Hampton touched on how this increase in Black female officers is a new development since she first started.

"Compared to when I came on the department, this is very unusual to have this many females, especially this many Black females," shared Sgt. Hampton. "And for this to be a traffic unit, you know traffic is one of the most dangerous calls that we could go on."

The bond between these officers is strengthened by their shared identity and experiences, which comes with its own set of challenges.

"That comes with the job, so you honestly have to love what you do," said another officer.

The APD is emphasizing the importance of these officers and the powerful role they play in keeping the community safe.

"We’re looking for people who are carrying contraband, people who are a danger to themselves or others," stated Officer Michaela Herring. "[We’re] just really keeping the community safe and a lot of those interactions start in the vehicle."

With the recent appointment of Timya Robinson as the first Black female police captain in Atlanta Public Schools, the APD is continuing to showcase their strides in diversity. This all-Black female traffic unit stands as a testament to the dedication of these officers to protect and serve their community.
