Atlanta plans to create a second micro-community for Black-owned businesses.
The South Park Cottages in Atlanta are creating a new trend in housing: micro-homes. Each of the cottages are under 1,000 square feet yet they come with all the standard rooms one would have in a full-sized home, including a full kitchen, living room and bathroom. The developer of this first ever Black-owned micro-community, Booker T. Washington, is out to change the way Black people live.

Janis Williams, one of the residents, downsized from a five-bedroom dwelling to one of these micro-homes and considers it one of the best investments she has ever made. She said, “It’s a really good deal for me. I think it's the best thing I've bought in a long time.”

The success of the South Park Cottages has motivated Washington to create a second Black-owned micro community. He has partnered with Techie Homes to build 26 units in the Metro Atlanta suburb of Union City, with mixed-used retail spaces included. The homes start at under $200,000, making them a viable option for many Black families who would otherwise be renting.

Washington believes that this project is not just about selling homes, but also about “growing wealth and decreasing the gap." He is providing a solution to the expensive housing market and making homeownership available to families who may have otherwise thought it was out of reach. And, in a true show of generosity, he even gifted one of the residents, Janis Williams, with her own home.
