Is the trend of local co-op games coming back? During The Game Awards, the team behind the chaotic co-op game Overcooked revealed their next project. And it seems to have taken some inspiration from the work of Hazelight, the team behind the split-screen co-op adventure game It Takes Two.
Did you catch the announcement of two new co-op adventure games specifically designed for two players at The Game Awards 2024 last night? The one that has everyone talking is Split Fiction, the latest project from Josef Fares and his team at Hazelight. While the name and release date were already leaked beforehand, the reveal trailer promises a fun premise and unique mechanics for each level.
But it turns out that Ghost Town Games, the team behind Overcooked and its sequel, have been working on a similar project. However, their game, titled Stage Fright, has a more cartoonish and Luigi's Mansion-inspired presentation, with British voice acting. It's hard not to draw comparisons to Hazelight's work, as Ghost Town Games describes it as "an all-new co-operative experience for two players" that can be enjoyed both locally and online.
Even publisher Hello Games mentions It Takes Two when discussing the demand for co-op games: "Overcooked sparked a resurgence, but there aren't enough games that you can play with friends. The huge success of Overcooked and It Takes Two shows that people really crave them." It seems they are referring to local co-op games, as there are plenty of multiplayer games out there but couch co-op has become a lost art.
Judging from the trailer, Stage Fright will also utilize split-screen as the child protagonists find themselves in two parallel worlds where actions in one can affect the other. And while the game is limited to only two players, it promises to deliver "Overcooked-style chaotic moments" as players navigate through escape room-esque challenges.
As for the release date, Stage Fright currently has no set window and is only scheduled to launch on PC via Steam. However, if it follows in the footsteps of Overcooked, it may also make its way to consoles. There is even a possibility that it will be available on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2, which is expected to arrive in 2025, but only time will tell.
It seems that the protagonists won't be separated throughout the entire adventure, as the trailer hints at potential reunions between them. We can't wait to see how their story unfolds.
