July 7th 2023.
Elden Ring is one of the most highly praised games of the year, and with good reason. Just in time for the Prime Day sale, Elden Ring is now available at a great discount, and for anyone considering picking it up, I can confidently say it's worth it.
The variety of gameplay, artwork, and level design make this a virtually perfect game. Don't be fooled by the idea of it being too difficult or too challenging. With the right level of progress and some cooperative help, the bosses are actually the easiest part of the game.
It only takes a couple of hours of playing to get you hooked on the game, and once you get to that point, you won't be able to stop. I'm not the only one who has experienced this; everyone I know who has played the game has had the same reaction.
For the amount of money you're paying for it now, it is easily the best game of the year and possibly even of the last two generations. I'd definitely put it above Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom.
It's a shame that Capcom seems to be afraid to revive some of their more beloved retro franchises. Exoprimal and Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess may do well, but I'm certain that a new Dino Crisis or Onimusha would be more popular. It would be great to see them bring back some of their more cartoonish action games, ideally Ghosts 'N Goblins.
Peter Molyneux is someone you can't trust. He's still trying to sell his game as the most amazing thing ever made, but I'm not falling for it this time. His game will never be as great as he says it will be, and he'll still be talking about it five years from now.
It's July and I've already pre-ordered my first game of the year; Spider-Man 2. I'm also looking forward to Assassin's Creed, but I'm waiting for that one until it goes on sale. Most of the best games this year are coming out between 6 September and 10 October, so it's a shame that Sony exclusives don't drop in price for a while.
I'm not in agreement with Wyrmwood's opinion on The Calisto Protocol. In an era of over-inflated and needlessly convoluted stories, the game is a breath of fresh air. The combat is unique and satisfying, and overall it has a great atmosphere.
It's sad to see the documents from Sega's last days as a hardware manufacturer. They had the franchises to compete with Nintendo again, but up against Sony and their more mature games, they had nothing. If only they had managed to get a 3D Sonic game out in time, or had been able to keep Tomb Raider as an exclusive. At the end of the day, Sega brought their downfall upon themselves.
Elden Ring - it's definitely worth it
As the Friday letters page has been discussing, there is not much trust in Peter Molyneux and his new game. However, with the Prime Day sale offering a big discount on Elden Ring, I can definitely vouch that it is the real deal and absolutely worth it.
The game has a lot of value for money, offering variety, artwork, level design, and much more. Don't be put off by the idea of fighting bosses alone, as there is a lot of help to be found in co-op, making the bosses rather easy. It only takes a couple of hours to get hooked on the game, and this is the experience of everyone I've ever talked to about it.
In comparison to the best games of the current two generations, which includes Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, I can say that Elden Ring is easily the best game of 2022, and possibly even of the entire two generations. I'm highly impressed with the game and would recommend it to anyone.
Capcom has been giving out vague hints of bringing back retro franchises for years now, and I would love to see them do that. It would be great to have a new game from the Ghosts 'N Goblins series, or at least a decent Mega Man game. The games they have made recently have all been pretty serious, so I'd be interested to see them make something a bit more goofy.
I have to admit that I'm not holding out much hope for Peter Molyneux's new game. I was burnt by Godus, and I'm not giving him any second chances. I'm sure he'll still be talking about it in five years, and it'll be more and more advanced and original.
It's July, and I've already pre-ordered my first game of the year. It's Spider-Man 2, and I've gone for the £80 one on PSN as me and my mate are sharing it. I'm also after the new Assassin's Creed but I'm holding off for the moment as it's out two days after Spider-Man 2 and Sony exclusives don't really drop in price for a good few years, whereas Assassin's Creed does.
It's sad to read all the documents from Sega during its last days as a hardware manufacturer. Everyone knew they were doomed and the rot had already set in during the Mega Drive era with the pointless Mega-CD and 32X. Even if they had managed to get a proper 3D Sonic game out in time, it may not have mattered as the industry was changing and people were looking for something more mature. Sega also saw their main competitor as PlayStation rather than Nintendo, and if they had managed to hold on to Tomb Raider and a few others as exclusives, they could have saved themselves.
I have to respectfully disagree with Wyrmwood's opinion on The Calisto Protocol. In an era of bloat, padding, and contrived storytelling, I found the game a breath of fresh air. It's brutal, beautiful, and compelling, and I think everyone should give it a look.
