For 60 years, the Toledo community has known where to get some good ribs, rib tips, or Polish sausage - Ann’s Bar-B-Que. Founded in 1963 by Joann and Samuel Stuart, this family-owned business is now the longest running Black-owned business in the city of Toledo, Ohio.
Samuel Stuart Jr., the grandson of the original owners, spoke to WTOL 11 about the restaurant's importance in the community. Growing up, he had not realized the significance of the restaurant to the Toledo community. But now, as he works to carry on his grandparent's legacy, he is increasingly aware of how much it means to the community.
"It's tough," Samuel said. "Sometimes you're looking at 100-degree temperatures in here when it's 95 outside, and that's all in honor of him and his legacy and the hard work he put in to make sure we had something for future generations."
Robert Savage, whose father was close to the original owners, told WTOL 11 that the owners were "very good guys". He said his father could always count on them for help if he ever ran short.
The restaurant has kept the majority of its original menu items, and the reviews of Ann’s Bar-B-Que on Restaurant Guru are testament to the quality of the food. One user commented, "Ribs are excellent, the best in Toledo", and the website summarised the most common opinions from all 121 reviews, noting that the staff were friendly and the service was prompt. Ann’s Bar-B-Que was rated No.396 of 584 pubs and bars in Toledo.
Samuel is determined to keep the legacy of his grandparents alive and is making sure that the restaurant is available for future generations. Ann’s Bar-B-Que is a mainstay of the Toledo community and it looks like it'll be around for many years to come.
