Angela Yee invests in Detroit to help formerly incarcerated women build their financial futures.
Angela Yee is making a big impact on formerly incarcerated women with her latest investment in Detroit. The renowned radio host has just secured a 30-unit building in the city's Midtown area, with 10 of the apartments dedicated to formerly incarcerated women.

"We're providing housing for people who really need it," Yee said. "It's a real struggle for people once they get out of prison to find adequate housing."

Yee made it clear that her investment is more about giving back than making money. "The best and most satisfying thing is when somebody is like, you changed my life," she said. Her project is being done in partnership with Dr. Topeka K. Sam, founder of Ladies of Hope Ministries, which provides aid to formerly incarcerated women. Like Yee, Sam was once incarcerated and now uses her organization to help formerly incarcerated women across the country.

"What's so exciting about this project is that we're getting people a true fresh start and opportunity," Sam said. Yee was there on Wednesday, August 2 to make the final design decisions on the property, which she hopes to complete by May 2024.

Yee is no stranger to investing in Detroit. In addition to her latest development, she owns a hair store in Hazel Park and has previously rehabbed a home in the Boston Edison community. Her "Lip Service" co-host Jasmine Brand is also an investor in the project and is looking forward to seeing what will come out of it.

"It's really like it has a lot of potential, and you can see it come to fruition, so I'm super excited to see something start and blossom," Brand said.

Yee's actions are a reminder that success can be used to help the next person. "For me, if I can be successful the way that I have and make the money that I've made, there is no reason for me to do that on my own and not do anything that's not going to help the next person," she said.
