Famous fintech entrepreneur Angel Rich has recently faced consequences for her involvement in a tragic car accident in Prince George's County, Maryland. The incident, which occurred in 2023, resulted in a jury finding Rich guilty of one count of negligent manslaughter by vehicle. As a result, on January 20th, the Prince George's County Circuit judge sentenced her to 10 years in prison.
Rich gained notoriety through her popular banking app, Credit Rich, and her advocacy for financial literacy in the Black community on social media. However, due to the suspended sentence, she will only serve three years in prison, followed by supervised probation upon her release, according to Complex.
The incident took place on the MD-450 highway in April 2023, when Rich collided with another driver, Quinton Francis Jr., who sadly passed away from his injuries. The investigation revealed that Rich was speeding at the time, and toxicology reports showed the presence of alcohol in her system. Despite these findings, she was not found guilty of manslaughter or impaired driving charges.
State Attorney Tara Jackson emphasized the gravity of impaired driving and its irreversible consequences. She also reaffirmed her commitment to holding drunk drivers accountable and ensuring road safety. After her initial conviction, Rich was placed under house arrest. However, her violation of this term led to her arrest by U.S. Marshals in Virginia that September.
Before her legal troubles, Rich had established herself as a leader in the fintech industry, with her platform focused on financial knowledge and success. She also became the first Black woman to partner with Experian, using her Credit Rich app to educate diverse users on money management strategies, as showcased on her Instagram.
In the midst of her success, Rich also authored the book "The History of the Black Dollar" and was passionate about bridging the gap between technology and finance. However, as highlighted by the recent events, she is now facing the consequences of her actions and serves as a reminder of the devastating effects of impaired driving.
