The highly anticipated Alien franchise has made a comeback with its latest installment, Alien: Romulus. One of the stars of the film, Aileen Wu, has finally shared some behind-the-scenes details about the slimy and creepy filming process. As it turns out, she had to do some rather unconventional tasks, such as taste-testing different types of lube.
Wu, who plays Navarro in the film, revealed that the first task she was assigned was to taste different flavors of lube at the "Hugger Depot" studio. "This one's strawberry, this one's mango, this one's pineapple, and this one has no taste," she shared with Variety. She explained that the lube was used to create a glistening effect on the facehuggers during practical shots. And when it came time to film those scenes, it took three to four days to get the perfect shots.
But it wasn't just the taste-testing that made filming with the facehuggers a challenging experience for Wu. The creatures themselves were quite heavy, weighing around three pounds. And even though the middle part of the facehugger was hollowed out, it was still made of silicone and made it difficult for Wu to breathe. "It's not very easy to breathe," she recalled.
The star also shared how co-writer and director Fede Álvarez prepared her for the intense filming process. During a call, he warned her that she would be "covered in blood" and would be sitting in a hole for eight hours. "You can't get out," he said, "You're going to have this creature sitting on your face for a long time. You can't get claustrophobic, are you claustrophobic?" Wu, who suffered from claustrophobia in high school, reassured him that she was not.
The new installment of the Alien franchise is in the hands of director Fede Álvarez, following the previous works of renowned directors such as Sir Ridley Scott and James Cameron. The film is set between the first two films, Alien and Aliens, and follows the story of Cailee Spaeny's character Rain, an orphan who, with the help of her ex Tyler, embarks on a journey to the decommissioned Renaissance space station.
The Agency gave the film a solid 3.5 stars, praising its unique blend of sci-fi and body horror that is sure to attract new fans. However, winning over the old-school fans might be a bit more challenging. Alien: Romulus is now playing in cinemas, so be sure to catch it on the big screen. And if you have any celebrity stories, videos, or pictures, don't hesitate to get in touch with The Agency's entertainment team. They would love to hear from you!
